Dr. Smith and his wife are bringing their family from Georgia. They were strongly attracted to the Fairchild mission, which they would describe as “using our resources wisely and taking care of the people of the community.” Dr. Smith has practiced in a variety of areas and organizations, including government employee (active-duty military), independent contractor (emergency department), private practice employee; partner in medical practice partnership, sole proprietor/owner in private practice, and employee of residential addiction treatment centers. After college at The Citadel, he stayed in Charleston on an Air Force scholarship for medical school, then completed a family medicine residency. His first duty station with the Air Force was in family practice at Shaw AFB in SC. After completing training in Aerospace Medicine, he was assigned to F-16 Fighter Squadrons as their Flight Surgeon (medical officer) until he separated from active duty in 2000. After the military, Dr. Smith was attending in his hometown emergency room for four years, then transitioned into full private practice, including office, hospital/ICU/nursing home care, in practice settings including employee, then partner, then practice owner with a NP. In 2010, Dr. Smith became board-certified in Addiction Medicine through the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He served as the South Carolina state president for ASAM. In 2014, he sold his private practice to the local hospital and transitioned into full-time Addiction Medicine as a staff physician at Pavilion, a private, nonprofit, residential addiction treatment center near Asheville, NC. In early 2020, Dr. Smith accepted a position as Medical Director at Black Bear Lodge, a residential addiction treatment center, in the BH division of UHS in Northern Georgia.
Dr. Smith and his wife Nicole have eight children. Outside the office, Dr. Smith enjoys hiking, mountain/road biking, running, fishing, flying and spending time with his family.
