Fairchild is the First in County to Offer Advanced, Non-Invasive Down Syndrome Screening for Pregnant Women

Fairchild Medical Center is one of the few centers in California, and only center in Siskiyou County to offer nuchal translucency screening (NT) screening, a new, non-invasive test performed early in pregnancy to identify women at increased risk for Down syndrome and other birth defects.

NT screening is performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy and is offered to women of all ages. The screening is done via a high-resolution ultrasound exam of the nuchal area — a fold of skin at the back of the neck of the fetus. The results are combined with the mother's age to determine an adjusted risk for Down syndrome. The rate of detection for Down syndrome is about 80 percent and over 90 percent detection rate with the addition of blood work. Based on the results, a woman then has the option of undergoing amniocentesis for further diagnosis.

Fairchild Ultrasound Technologist Vivian French recently passed the National Boards to perform these tests and submit results directly to the California Department of Public Health’s Genetic Screening Program.

goldsealFairchild Receives Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval
for health care quality and safety

By demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety, Fairchild Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™.

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission is dedicated to continuously improving the safety and quality of the nation's health care through voluntary accreditation.

"Above all, the national standards are intended to stimulate continuous, systematic and organization-wide improvement in an organization's performance and the outcomes of care," says Mark Pelletier, R.N., M.S., executive director, Hospital  Programs, Accreditation and Certification Services, The Joint Commission. "The community should be proud that Fairchild is focusing on the most challenging goal -- to continuously raise quality and safety to higher levels."

CEO Jonathon Andrus spoke of his pride in a staff whose members ask what needs to be done to be accredited by The Joint Commission.  "In addition, they appreciate the educational aspect of the survey and the opportunity to interact with the team of surveyors." He called the accreditation, "proof of an organization-wide commitment to provide quality care on an ongoing basis."
